UON CELEBRATES STAR STUDENT LISA WELE`S TABLE TENNIS SUCCESS

Lisa Wele, a Second-year student of the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Arts and social sciences is among the four Kenyan ladies listed for the upcoming Africa Festival of Table Tennis that is scheduled to take place from 1st May 2023 to 6th May 2023 at Kasarani. Lisa, who had recently represented Kenya in the Eastern Regional Qualifiers made it to the list due to her exceptional performance and commitment in her past encounters. During a recent interview, Lisa shared her excitement on being selected to participate in the upcoming Africa Festival of Table Tennis.

Lisa’s passion for table tennis began when she attended St. Monica Girls School Kitale, located in Trans Nzoia County, where she honed her skills and eventually represented Kenya at the Africa Games in Morocco in 2019. St. Monica’s Girls School, Kitale is a well-known institution for girls’ table tennis in Kenya. She continued to make waves in the sport and went on to represent Kenya in the Africa Senior Club Championship in Cameroon in 2021, cementing her status as a force to be reckoned with in the sport.  In fact, Lisa recently competed in the ITTF-Africa Regional Championship, which was held in Djibouti just last month.

Throughout her career, Lisa has achieved numerous accolades, including winning a silver medal in the East African Games in Tanzania in 2019, and a gold medal in the Kenya University Sports Federation University Games in Kibabii.

When asked about her approach to the game, Lisa emphasized her commitment to continuous improvement and her dedication to balancing her academic pursuits with her training schedule. She expressed gratitude for the support she receives from her lecturers and the office of the Dean of Students, which has enabled her to pursue her passion for table tennis while continuing her studies.

Looking to the future, Lisa has her sights set on becoming a world champion and hopes to lift the name of her university and country in the process. She also plans to give back to the community that has contributed in nurturing her throughout her journey in the sports arena. Lisa’s determination and drive serves as an inspiration to young people everywhere, demonstrating that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. “I am training hard to be the world champion, I will perform well and lift my country’s name, lift the university’s name and above all give back to the community that has nurtured me” she said.

Lisa Wele has cited Dina Meshref from Egypt and Aruna Quadri from Nigeria as her role models, expressing a deep admiration for their playing styles and worldwide performances.
