Schools Reopening: UoN Announces Dates for Reporting
The University of Nairobi has commenced the phased reopening of on-site learning for the rest of the school after final year's students resumed on October 5.
In an address on Friday, October 23, the Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama announced that a section of the students would report on November 9.
The Senate recently approved the resumption of phased on-campus learning starting from November 9, 2020. The Senate decision is meant to help the students whose programs require practical learning in the laboratory to report back to campus.
First year students in the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Architecture and Engineering, Biological and Physical Sciences, Health Sciences and all students pursuing sciences in the College of Education and External Studies to report to their respective colleges," Kiama stated.
He added that the rest of the students would continue online learning until further notice to allow those whose studies require physical classes of practicals to resume.
The safe resumption of on-campus learning will conform to the Ministry of Health's Covid-19 protocols and guidelines.
In other good news, the VC announced that the Pardon Advisory Committee had reviewed and recommended several students to be readmitted to the university.
UoN has also launched a whistleblower policy for the detection and prevention of corruption and malpractice within the university.
The policy provides a procedure for the making of good faith disclosures; protection of those who make such disclosures from reprisals and a mechanism for an appropriate investigation of and response to such disclosures
Tertiary institutions have continued with the resumption of studies for non-final year students as the Ministry of Education suspended mass reopening of primary and secondary schools.
Only Grade Four, Class 8 and Form Four students will continue with their studies.
The Kenya Association of International Schools (KAIS) already postponed mass reopening for their students in line with a directive from the Ministry of Education.
On Thursday, October 22, Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi assured parents that they should not be worried about the upsurge in Covid-19 cases after two schools in Mombasa were closed.
Education CAS Zack Kinuthia added that schools would not be shut down again and national exams would proceed as planned. The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam is scheduled for March 22, 2021, with the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Exams (KCSE) commencing on March 25, 2021.
