PDF version

He is currently pursuing his doctorate degree (PhD.) at the University of Nairobi (UoN). He intends to even specialize in other administrative courses relating to Sport Administration and management. He is a part time lecturer in the Department of Physical Education and Sport .Meet with the Director of Sports & Games Department, Mr. Mbaabu Murithi .

He Joined UoN in 1996, and has witnessed drastic developments in the Department, as he proudly narrates to me. They include increased sports facilities, more available standardized sports equipment, and more participation of students in friendly matches in regional and world university games. He informs me that there has also been an increase in the number of staff.

In place currently is a well defined structure of how students participate in various Sports and Games and an increased number of recommendations for students, in order for them to easily get jobs in the corporate world. There are now more students joining national clubs and others are continuously getting international scholarships. There have already been five national scholarships from Sporton magazine and four of them, were scooped by students from UoN. The Sportson magazine in conjunction with Nation Media Group targets and highlights excelling students in UoN and Kenyatta University.

UoN, he tells me, shall be hosting the 7th edition of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) games from the 11- 17 July 2013. He adds that the rationale as to why the University was chosen to be the host was because of the following reasons;

  • UoN is the oldest University in Kenya
  • UoN is located  at a central location at the heart of the capital city of Nairobi
  • The Personnel at the University  are highly skilled with a lot of experience
  • The university is well endowed with specialized sports equipment
  • UON has a good legacy as it hosted the same games in 1978

He further informs me that UoN was also considered and lucky to been given this rare and prestigious opportunity because the university has some officers who have been duly elected in respected sports federations in the following hierarchical order;

  • Mr. Mbaabu Murithi ,Director, Sports & Games Department is the chairman of Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA)
  • Mr. Simon Munai is the Secretary General at the  East Africa Universities Sports Federation (EAUSF)
  • Prof. Jacob Nteere is the first Vice-Chairman of the Federation of  African University Sports (FASU) and who also a board member of Federation of International University Sport (FISU)
